Hamburg has set its sights on sustainable inner-city development. New neighborhoods with more spaces for housing, services, manufacturing, traffic, and leisure are now being created. However, building density and the location of open spaces must be carefully balanced in order to preserve the environment and maintain short travelling distances within the city.

What residential, working, mobility, and leisure spaces are needed in a dense, sustainable, and yet affordable city? What role does the ground on which the city is built play? How-and with what materials-should buildings be built or reconditioned in order to be climate-friendly?
