Were early modern religious conflicts wars 'of religion', 'for religion', 'between religions', or 'about religion'? The ways in which war was waged and peace was agreed in the 'long sixteenth century' were strongly influenced by, had a deep connection with, and produced a lasting impact on, the religious divide of Latin Christianity in the wake of the Reformation. This collection of essays seeks to analyse historically these influences, connections, and impacts from multiple points of view. Were early modern religious conflicts wars "of religion", "for religion", "between religions", or "about religion"?
Heavenly Providence

SFr. 189,95
From 1534-1541, Calvin used the image of the fountain to portray God as the source of everything, with the power to preserve and give life to all creatures. Between the Latin edition of the Institutes in 1539 and the French translation of that work in 1541, Calvin was indecisive about the definition of special providence. However, he defined three kinds of divine providence in 1552. Based on these definitions, Calvin presented his exegesis on the Book of Job and the Book of Psalms through his sermons and commentaries. From 1534-1559, Calvin formulated his biblical doctrine of divine providence.Suk Yu Chan provides a revisit of John Calvin's interpretation of the doctrine of divine providence. Constantino de la Fuente (San Clemente, 1502-Seville, 1560)

SFr. 169,95
Frances Luttikhuizen traces Constantino de la Fuente's religious experience from the Erasmian influence at Alcalá de Henares during his university days in the 1520s to being the main spokesperson for the evangelistic tendencies emerging in Spain in the 1550s. His theology shows strong parallels with the renovating current within the Catholic Church of the first half of the 15th century, which emphasised a genuine, personal religious experience, an "inner Christianity" that highlighted the doctrine of justification by faith and downplayed external rites and the invocation of saints. Constantino's sermons on Psalm 1-of which the first translation into English is appended-provides an example of both his preaching style and his theology. A Landmark in Turbulent Times

At the Synod of Dordrecht, the deep questions of justification and faith, election and rejection, time and eternity, grace and free will, the individual and the body of Christ, Israel and the church, the acquisition of salvation through Christ and its application by His Spirit, baptism and regeneration, and especially the precise relationship between these, were at stake. In this study lines are drawn to the historical, theological and political context during that period. Patristics, Middle Ages, metaphysical questions and the church polity of Dordt are discussed as well with some hermeneutical nowadays reflections.
